Hypothyroidism means reduced thyroxine hormone in the body in which the thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormone. It is a very common endocrine disorder affecting commonly women Hypothyroidism deficiency can disrupt such things as body temperature, heart rate. Congenital hypothyroidism can also occur that result in cretinism if not treated early. Some drugs like amiodarone or chemotherapy drugs can also cause hypothyroidism.

  • Generalized weakness
  • Weight gain
  • Irregular menstrual cycle
  • Muscle Pain
  • Arthralgia
  • Constipation
  • Dry skin
  • Hair loss
  • Depression
  • Anemia
  • Puffy face
  • Cold intolerance
  • Fatigue
  • Lethargy
  • High cholesterol

INVESTIGATION

Serum FT4, low or low normal, Serum TSH – Elevated

TREATMENT

Synthetic Levothyroxine replacement is the primary treatment. Hypothyroid with pregnancy should be treated carefully and early as it may hamper the CNS development of fetus.
